My introduction to this species was in the spring of 2016 when I began to build a section of this web site for Julian Velasco,
who had been the bonsai curator at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden between 2006 and 2016.
I did a Google search of "premna serratifolia" and learned many interesting things, not the least of which
is the fact that Premna leaves and bark are widely used for medicinal purposes in many parts of the world.
This is by no means an endorsement of its use for medicinal purposes, it is just part of the information
I found about this fascinating tree which was of interest to me. Try a search to learn more
about this amazingly interesting tree and its uses as a bonsai and beyond.
Premna makes an excellent indoor bonsai. They do well indoors and can be kept
outdoors in warm weather.
They like a lot of direct sun, but will do well with limited direct sun.
In nature, they flower and produce fruit from spring to fall. They are valued for their smooth bark,
and with age and in nature they develop twisted deadwood. Leaf reduction is possible at a rate well
beyond most
species used for bonsai cultivation making this a favorite among serious bonsai hobbyists.
